First ThoughtsInsanity was unlike anything I've ever read before. I usually shy away from creepy suspense books because I'm honestly not trying have any nightmares when I lay down for bed. That being said-- I picked up Insanity on Amazon for free because of the gorgeous cover and I'm happy I did because I quite liked the book! The story was gripping, the romance filled me with sorrow, and I thought I had the plot twist figured out when another one hit me smack dab in the face! I'm definitely interested in seeing where the rest of this series goes!
What I Enjoyed
The chapters from the past were quite heartbreaking.
It pained me to read of the abuse Addy suffered at the hands of her father. Although I took solace in her budding romance with Damien, there was an ominous feel to the book that made it clear Addy and Damien weren't going to have their happily ever after.
The mystery.
Adelaide constantly questions herself in Insanity-- she isn't really crazy, right? Or is she? I honestly couldn't quite tell. There were times where it seemed she was completely lucid and sharp, but when she saw Damien as an orderly at the insane asylum, I began questioning her.
The real plot twist.
Let's just say, 99% of people reading this story will guess the plot twist. Don't be fooled. There is another one you will never see coming. Or maybe you will, but I certainly didn't.
What Could Have Been Better
The editing.
Quote - "You watch **you're** tone and mind my authority, Adelaide, or--"
Yikes. While the mistakes were few and far between, it still took away from the flow of the writing and story whenever I caught them.
Memorable Quote
I. Am. Not. Crazy. That's just ludicrous. Ridiculous.
Honestly, guys, I believed her until I didn't any more. I don't know what to believe! Read it for yourself and tell me what you think!

Insanity The Asylum Trilogy Book 1 eBook Lauren Hammond PWL Editing Services Reviews
I purchased this book, because I was assigned the letter 'I' for a monthly book club challenge. I searched , and this was the first book I came across that looked interesting. I was definitely not disappointed...and it was free, so double score. There are two other books in the series, and for $.99 each, I got all three at the same time, which I was really glad about when I got to the cliffhanger at the end of Insanity.
This series is a dark, sad read. It is also a little confusing since it flips between the 'Before' and 'After' of an event in the heroine's life, and the event changes in the subsequent books. Also, the editing is not very good. However, if you are like me and can overlook editing for a good story, I would recommend this series for anyone who enjoys darker, more suspenseful stories. Please understand that this is not one of those stories that wraps everything up neatly, though. I still had some questions at the end, but it also felt true to the story that I didn't get all of the answers and that I was confused about some things. Also, although there is a love story involved, be aware that this is probably more a suspense/drama than romance genre. This is NOT a light, easy, happily ever after story; just know that going in. You also have to read all three books, and read them in order.
I am giving the first book a 3, although I'd have given it a 4 if the editing were better.
I am giving the 2nd and 3rd books 3s for both the story and editing.
I honestly wasn't expecting much from Insanity. It sounded interesting, yet predictable, but I gave it a chance anyway. And I loved it! It's set in 1958 which I was not expecting at all! Adelaide has been in an asylum for who knows how long. She sure doesn't. She also has no clue why she's there in the first place. All she know is that she loves Damien and has to get out and find her way back to him. But Damien is a new orderly and tells Adelaide that he'll get her out. If only things were that easy.
Insanity is 100% melodramatic and over-the-top, and yet it worked for me. Adelaide is in love beyond reason. Damien is her everything and her last hope at a normal life. The narrative alternates from the present to before Adelaide was committed. The past chapters show her as 17 and hopelessly in love with the boy she believes is going to take her away from her abusive father. The present shows her as however old (we're not told because of reasons) and trying to prove that she's not crazy even though she can't remember anything from before.
One of Insanity's twists is super obvious from the beginning, but that didn't bother me. The details surrounding why were more important. But then there's another twist and I was like WTF IS GOING ON?! How is that possible?! What happened between then and now?! Why is all of this even still happening? Tell me!
Clearly, Insanity far exceeded my expectations. It was a very quick and engaging story. I had to keep reading to find out what had happened to Adelaide to land her in this horrible asylum. I do wish that the time period had played into things a bit more. It does in the sense that all of the patients are terrified of receiving electroshock therapy or a lobotomy. But other than that, it could have been set at any time. I still had to immediately purchase the sequel though.
