Nurse, Annabelle Winslow, returns to London from the Crimean War to face the misdeeds of her past. Five years ago she ruled the ballrooms of fashionable society as Lady Arabella Winslow, The Incomparable Araby, a singular beauty who rent hearts and hopes at will. Facing her past means facing the man who betrayed her – the man she loved who in exchange for her heart, ruthlessly stripped away her pride and her dignity for the sake of revenge.
Michael Lassiter is handsome, wealthy, powerful and a natural rogue. Still, Araby captivates him like no other woman until her thoughtless words devastate his younger brother and destroy his future. In his anger, Michael sets in motion a chain of events that will alter all of their lives and five years later force him into a confrontation with a young woman who continues to haunt him, who he has never been able to forget, nor forgive.

Other than the editing errors, I loved the story of Annabelle. Descriptions of war conditions and pestilence and the intricacies of period relationships fraught with scandals over time were captivating. Thank you Mrs. Patterson. Cannot wait for more.
Grab a cup of cocoa, a comfy blanket and A Terrible Beauty, and then try not to be too shocked when you realize you've read the day (or night) away. Gone. Poof. I love a good book filled with obstacles for the main characters to overcome, add in tidbits of fascinating historical facts, and the story bounces up a couple of notches in realism and becomes all the more compelling. I was so caught up in Belle's life, I wanted to reach through my s' screen and slap our so-called hero's face -- numerous times. Thank goodness for character growth! Insights towards the book's end helped me better understand the hero's motivations. All in all, a thoroughly good read!
Can't wait to get my mitts on book 2 of The Season of the Furies.
I absolutely love the story! I've not read very many historical romances that center on the early days of female nursing and found this quite interesting. Haven't we all encountered a group as dreadful as the Furies? As a retired high school teacher I still remember a group of young snakes that graduated several years ago and just how similar they were to the Furies. Can't wait to read the other books in the series. Come on Steph, let's get going with this!
I am not generally a reader of this genre but wanted to read A Terrible Beauty because I had been told the author was a great new talent. I expected a book I would enjoy because I thought that Stephanie Patterson would not publish unless it was a work that make me feel like my time was well spent reading it. I was so pleased to find it a compelling and entertaining story. The characters are well developed and the historical setting is informative and engaging. I found myself caring about the characters. They captured my emotions and had me feeling angry, afraid, annoyed, hopeful and satisfied. In the end is that not what makes a great novel...a book that captures ones imagination and attention.
This is the first I've read from this author. What an great story! It was so well written on the level of the late Kathleen Woodviss. There is intrigue and suspense that keep the reader glued until the end. Historically accurate both with social morals of 1850s London as well as the world events. Sort of like Downton Abbey with the personal tragedies of the each of these three girls known as the Furies by the London ton. Realistic characters with all their flaws but eventually it all comes full circle for Arabelle/Annabelle and Michael Lassiter. I really loved this story; waiting for Katherine's plan of escape. Diamondgirl
I enjoyed the story and I enjoyed the way the heroine grew, changed for the better, and matured. She made a big difference in a lot of people's lives; especially during the Crimean War. The "Hero" was not much to talk about. He treated the heroine horribly and judged and treated her in a terrible manner. He judged her without getting the facts about her and why she was behaving like she did. He did not change in the way he treated her until after others opened his eyes. The heroine is worth the read. She should have kicked the "hero" to the curb.
Very few authors can intice me to pay full price for a book. Not only did this book hold my attention until 5 am when I had to be at work by 6. Pay full price for the next in the series was what I did as soon as I came home. A Terrible Beauty is book 1 of The Furies it is a story of what at first appears to be 3 very spoiled and spiteful young ladies. But all is not as it appears. While Araby the h of the story certainly did very bad things, she was just trying to survive and escape a world of abuse while being a puppet for someone far more spiteful than she. In my opinion the H thought way too much of himself, only seeing what he wanted to. Without serious question he allowed one of the villains to manipulate him into actions that would cost the h way more than what his revenge was worth. My only gripe is I wish the H had groveled really "groveled" for the h deserved it. Too many times a great story sours for me due to the H being forgiven way to easily. I definitely recommend reading a Terrible Beauty.
Hit and misses. Liked the sharing of some history people forget (Crimean) and first major women Nurses/Doctors. Well done.
Also liked the journey of the Male lead from anger to falling in love.
Misses was the Furies not believing anyone wouldn’t help friend from being abused by Step Father. Until the current time period England (and many other countries) consider women and children property and they not only should but must receive physical correction. Her Uncles view was the norm.
Miss, his not having to marry her. No way, they would have been forced to hitch, especially once step father found out. He didn’t have title, but he would have taken money.
