The first of Mari Jungstedt's Gotland murder mysteries, featuring Inspector Knutas and the young journalist Johan Berg. These novels have everything we have come to expect from Scandi noir -- tense plotting, strong characterization, and a powerful sense of place. The island of Gotland, where these novels are set, is a particularly lovely and exotic locale. It plays a major role in the stories. The Gotland setting puts the contrast between fictional Swedish crime and actual Swedish crime into sharp focus. When I visited Gotland a few years ago, our hotel had a rack of Ms. Jungstedt's novels in the lobby, mostly in Swedish. I told the innkeeper that I wished more had been translated: he laughed and said that her books were very popular, but perhaps a little exaggerated. He told me that there had been just one real murder on Gotland in the last 35 years, despite the extraordinariy high fictional crime rate. For Sweden as a whole, there were 93 deaths in 2009 due to manslaughter, assault or murder, in a population of 9.4 million. Fictionally, of course, the place is awash in blood. One is reminded of 1930's Britain, when fictional murder ran rampant, but the country in fact was very law abiding. Ah, well, that's what makes fiction fun.

I really enjoyed 'Unseen'. Interesting setting and good mystery at the heart of the narrative. Jungstedt's style is very plain. Making the need for solid plotting and clearly drawn characters all the more important. The novel moves along well. And the style is immensely readable. Almost Hemingwayesque in its straightforwardness, 'Unseen' was a real pleasure to read. I'm up for more Mari Jungstedt!
I have read all of the available books in this series and look forward to another in the future. Unseen focuses on a string of murders of women on the island of Gotland, offshore from Sweden. While I tired of the on again/off again romance between the TV reporter and the married mother of two that goes from book to book, the reporter seems to assist Knutas in solving crimes through links Knutas doesn't have or hasn't thought of. I became hooked on these nordic mysteries after reading Stieg Larsson's novels and have found a new home with Mari Jungsedt's mysteries.
Scandinavian crime novels took the world by the storm. Deftly written, dark and exotic, made wellcome change to regular run off the mill stuff that we are being fed in the USA.
Some people call them gloomy and depressing. I strongly disagree with that statement. They just happen to be much more realistic than the feel good drivel showered upon the unsuspecting American readers.
" Unseen" is not the best of the modern Scandinavian mystery. The plot is not much more than the average serial killer fare. The detectives are hard to describe because they don't live much impression.
On the positive side it is a quick and effortless read, and I might try another one of her books.
This is the first book I've read by Jungstedt and I really enjoyed it. The plot was intriguing and I liked the main character. I did feel as if a subplot about one of the potential murder victims and a journalist who works with the police was left unresolved. And the ending of the book was a bit abrupt. I went to tap on the bottom right hand corner of the page and.....that was it! No more pages and I was slightly taken back. But overall I really enjoyed the book and will definitely read more by this author!
Ms. Jungstedt was an unknown author for me so I was surprised to find her novel so enjoyable. The story is full of interesting female characters that are more fully developed than the police detective 'hero'. I interpret that as a good sign for future books in the series in that the author will build (and is capable of building) a personality and back story for the hero so that he will grow more interesting as time goes on. And, this strategy makes me want to read another of Ms Jungstedt's novels, sooner rather than later.
This is the first book I have read by this author. There is a theme that permeates this story of crime, investigation and resolution. It is about connection between partners, and between parents and children. Sometimes it is hard to remember that the perpetrator of a crime had a childhood, had parents. It can be hard to remember that the environment, especially the emotional environment of a childhood, has strong a strong influence over a developing person. Blame, and the resulting shame, can freeze a person's development. Even with this in mind, a reader still cannot excuse a lack of self-responsibility. That is the difference between the perpetrator and those who seek him because of his crimes, and I think this author gets this important distinction. It will be interesting to see how this author develops her character, Inspector Anders Knutas, in future books.
This is a well-written and intelligent novel, with good setting, atmosphere, characterization and plot development. The ending is fairly good as well, as it is dramatic and suspenseful. The story's conspicuous weakness for me, however, is the uselessness of the police investigators, who never discover any useful clues or draw any insightful conclusions or even narrow down the focus of their investigation. Even when given one or two massive clues, the police still don't put things together. In the end it's other characters who solve the puzzle, and one is left feeling that the investigators are incompetent or that the writer doesn't know how to have her investigators unravel a mystery. Hopefully the author learns how to do this in future books, as she is otherwise a very talented writer.
