This is an adorable book. Both the text and the illustrations are whimsical and sweet. The story is so cute and funny. The main message of the book is simple, profound, and never outrightly stated- To accept others for who they are.
I care for six children, ages one year-old to nine years-old. The nine, eight, and seven year-olds laughed at the story the first time I read it aloud. They picked up on the subtle humor and gentle irony.
The one year-old liked the pictures, and the four year-old twins loved the story and, with explanations along the way, could understand the humor of Sparky winning at a game of "statue" etc. =)
(Just be prepared, after you finish reading the book aloud, to explain why we can't really order a sloth in the mail! =D)
The older kids are always willing to read this story to the younger kids, and it's definitely a favorite.
After we read this book the first time, the kids and I talked about loving others just as they are. They totally get it. =)
I highly recommend this sweet book! =)

This is such a cute book. The illustrations and the story are so unique and sweet. My kids and I had checked this book out at our local public library and knew we had to have this in our personal library! My 4 and 6 year old loved it, but I could also see older kids and adults enjoying the book as well.
Adorable book, simple, sweet and humorous story and illustrations. I paired it with Wild republic's hanging 3 toed sloth. They were a Christmas hit for my 6 year old. Delivery was swift!
One of my recent favorites. Love Jenny Offill's work and love this particular story featuring a lovable sloth that will always be a sloth no matter what the main character may demand of it. The question is, when will she realize that being a sloth was always enough?
There’s a sort of emotional void in the tone — the protagonist’s mother has no warmth or humor, there’s a goody-two-shoes who you’re supposed to hate, there’s no believable affection between the girl and the sloth, and there’s a gratuitous mention of the word “god” as something a parrot might say. Wha?!
This book was a present for my daughter who loves sloths. 5is was so fun. It explained about sloths in a fun story of a young girl who gets a sloth for a pet because her mom said she can only have a pet if she can find one she doesn’t have to take on walks, fed often or clean up after it poops. Lovely illustrations and good quality print and paper, but strange, kind of depressing story. I don't think small children would understand this story. I don't even want to give it to my niece.
Bought this book for my friend, whose whole family is a fan of sloths. She read the book to her kids and everyone really enjoyed it. Both the storyline and artwork is lovely and adorable. Makes a great gift for sloth lovers of any age!
